In a time when courage and resilience are needed more than ever, the story of 13-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel serves as a beacon of strength. DJ, a young boy from Houston, Texas, has been fighting brain and spine cancer since 2018. Despite the bleak prognosis, he has tirelessly battled for his survival and to fulfill his dream of being part of law enforcement. His unwavering admiration for those who wear the badge led him to be sworn in as an honorary member of the Secret Service by President Trump. Now, Blacks in Law Enforcement of America (BLEA), a national organization dedicated to advocating for and supporting the professional development of Black law enforcement officers, proudly stands with DJ Daniels.

DJ’s story embodies the core values of law enforcement: service, integrity, and bravery. At an age when many children are focused on school and play, DJ has devoted his limited time to raising awareness about childhood cancer and supporting law enforcement officers across the country. Although he has never officially served, his commitment to the badge powerfully reflects the values upheld daily by many officers, especially those in BLEA.

However, DJ’s journey has not been without adversity. In June 2024, he was bullied at a Houston gas station because of his uniform and appearance, a direct consequence of his ongoing medical treatments. The cruelty he faced highlights the challenges that young Black boys, especially those with unique stories, continue to encounter in our society. BLEA condemns any harassment or discrimination against DJ and others like him. His dedication to law enforcement deserves celebration, not ignorance and cruelty.

As an organization dedicated to fostering trust between law enforcement and the Black community, BLEA acknowledges DJ’s remarkable efforts to bridge this divide. His story embodies true justice and unity—a world where service is honored, and those who strive to protect and serve are elevated, regardless of their background.

BLEA urges law enforcement agencies across the country to keep supporting DJ Daniels. Beyond mere symbolic gestures, concrete actions should be taken to enhance his message about childhood cancer awareness, honor his commitment, and ensure that young Black boys perceive law enforcement as a dignified and respected career path.

As an organization, BLEA firmly rejects partisan politics. Our mission is based on justice, fairness, and the pursuit of equitable law enforcement practices. We support DJ Daniels not because of political affiliations or agendas, but because he embodies the courage and commitment that law enforcement should represent. Our focus remains on unity, community engagement, and advocating for those who dedicate their lives to public service.

DJ Daniels embodies the true meaning of a hero. His bravery, commitment, and passion for law enforcement inspire all. BLEA proudly stands with DJ today and always.
